Events and Festivals

There are numerous festivals held across Canada throughout the year. Some of the best include, The Québec City Winter Carnival, (the first two weeks of February), Ottawa's three-week Winterlude (starts in early February), The Montréal Jazz Festival (in late June or early July), the Ottawa International Jazz Festival (in late July) Pride Week in Toronto (in late June), the Toronto International Film Festival (in September) the famous Calgary Stampede (in the second week of July) and Victoria's First Peoples' Festival (in early August).

Climate

Canada's has four distinctly different seasons, their arrival times vary slightly across the country. The west and east coasts are both quite wet with most of the rain falls during winter. The central Canadian prairies are fairly dry all year.

Autumn
The air is crisp and the trees put on a splendid display of autumn leaves. The spectacular autumn colours are best viewed in eastern Canada in late September or early October.

Winter,
Canadian winters are long and hard with much of Canada is blanketted in snow the average January temperature is -18°C (-0.4°F) but it can drop below -40°C (-40°F) with severe wind chills. Winter offers the ideal environment for skiers and skaters. The southern West Coast the temperate rainforests, are about the only place where you may not find snow. The ski season generally runs from December until the end of March in the East, and to the end of May in the West

Spring
Bringing new life to the country after the cold snowy winter. Flowering bulbs burst from the ground bringing colour and beautiful perfume.

Summer
Warm to hot weather can be enjoyed across Canada. July and August are the warmest months, when temperatures in the south are usually in the upper 20°C's (low 80°F's) with occasional extreme heat in some interior locations exceeding 40°C (104°F).

Getting there

By Air
Direct flights connect the major cities of the globe with the larger Canadian city airports, and Canada has airports across the country making most places easily accessed by connection commercial flights. Direct flights from the United States are available to many Canadian cities including Victoria, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Regina, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, London, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City, Saint John, Halifax and Yarmouth.

By Car
There are numerous road border crossings available to drivers. Some crossings can become very busy on weekends and public holidays especially crossings such as Niagara Falls.

By Train
There are four main rail routes from the United States these are New York to Montreal, New York to Toronto, Buffalo to Depew to Toronto, and Seattle to Vancouver.

By Bus / Coach
Greyhound bus services provide a huge network that connects with most major cities within and between Canada and the United States

By Ferry
Several ferries run from the United States to Canada on the east coast, and from Washington State USA to Vancouver Island in Canada.

Visas
Most Western visitors don't need a visa to visit Canada for up to 180 days. However visitors from some nations do need a Temporary Resident Visa.
